Working - Praying - Living
What We Do
The Gateway Vincentian Volunteers program is a yearlong service ministry (August through June) for young adults. Volunteers live in community in the city of St. Louis and work with the poor in organizations with a specific Vincentian connection—working with a Vincentian priest or brother, a Daughter of Charity, or another person grounded in the spirit of St. Vincent DePaul. A unique aspect of the Gateway Vincentian Volunteers program is that volunteers live not only in community with one another but also with Vincentian priests and brothers, who occupy the same apartment building.
Praying*"All other actions of the day receive their true value from prayer.” Vincent DePaul
The GVV staff, along with a variety of Vincentians and other individuals, will provide weekly community nights that consist of celebration of the Eucharist, followed by dinner and a reflection/discussion session. These sessions will center around 5 basic themes: Building Community, Prayer/Reflection, Vincentian Spirituality/The Call to Serve the Poor, Growing in Faith, and Issues of Social Justice. All sessions aim to help volunteers build a deeper understanding and appreciation of St. Vincent’s love for the poor. Staff will also provide an orientation program, three retreats during the year, and connect you to individuals who are available for spiritual direction. * All religious activity is voluntary.
